微软今天宣布，以36种语言在全球推出 Hotmail 的最新版“Windows Live Hotmail”，这是 Hotmail 自1996年7月诞生以来最重要的一次升级。
微软表示，今天开始，用户可以登录 www.hotmail.com 申请 Windows Live Hotmail 帐号，原有用户可以在用老帐号登录后，点击“Join Windows Live Hotmail(加入 Windows Live Hotmail)”进行升级。此前，已有约2千万用户使用了 Live Hotmail 的测试版，整个测试持续了两年。
微软在线服务集团高级副总裁斯蒂文·博科维茨(Steve Berkowitz)说：“能为全球超过2.8亿 MSN Hotmail 活跃用户提供 Windows Live Hotmail 服务，我们感到很振奋。Windows Live Hotmail 为用户提供了令人惊叹的点对点 email 体验，Windows Live Hotmail 提供的最佳服务可以让用户通过 PC、移动设备和互联网登录自己的邮箱。Windows Live Hotmail 是微软网络服务的基石，也是微软网络广告业务的核心部分，因为 email 对用户购物习惯发挥着关键作用。很高兴能在'微软战略客户峰会'前夕向广告主和用户推出这项服务。”
微软表示，本月底，Windows Live Hotmail 用户可通过 Microsoft Office Outlook Connector beta 软件，从 Outlook 2003 及 Outlook 2007 免费登录 Hotmail 帐号并获取联系人列表。此前，微软推出的类似服务收取19.95美元的年费。
未来几周，微软将发布 Windows Live Mail beta 客户端软件，供用户免费下载，该软件是 Outlook Express 及 Windows Mail on Windows Vista 的升级版。
另外，新版 Hotmail 的一大特色是用户可以通过手机或 PDA 登录 Hotmail 邮箱，未来，微软手机操作系统 Windows Mobile v6 中将提供更丰富的移动邮箱功能。
新版 Hotmail 还加强了垃圾邮件的管理功能，用户可以设置垃圾邮件账户，阻止接收该账户的所有邮件，还可以向微软举报该账户，使其加入微软的垃圾邮件过滤器，以保护其他用户不受垃圾邮件骚扰。
微软表示，新版 Hotmail 收件箱的存储空间仍为2G，未来将进一步扩容。
新版 Hotmail 还充分照顾了老用户的使用习惯，用户可以选择保留 MSN Hotmail 的使用界面，也可以切换到新版界面，新版界面与 Outlook 类似，并提供了很多高级功能。
